The Marshall Plan Scholarships Programme
With the support of the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation, an academic exchange programme has been established to fund scholarships for academic exchange between Austria and the USA.
Scholarship details
The Marshall Plan Scholarship invites applications from Austrian and American students who have an outstanding record of achievement in their field of study and plan a research stay abroad at least for three months. The focus of the programme is on applied sciences and technology. Research fields/topics are chosen freely by the applicants (bottom-up approach)
The funding amounts to up to € 10,000 (minimum € 4,000).
Application requirements
- Enrollment in one of the eligible study programmes at MedUni Vienna.
- The applicant must have been living in Austria for at least 2 years at the time of application.
- A minimum stay of 90 days is mandatory.
- The research projects are under the supervision and responsibility of an Austrian and an American academic.
- Participation in the program is only possible once.

Application & Selection
Applications have to be submitted to the International Office of MedUni Vienna (online application through the mobility management programme Mobility-Online).
After the evaluation by a committee of experts at MedUni Vienna, accepted proposals will be submitted to the Foundation electronically by MedUni Vienna's International Office via the Marshall Plan Scholarship web-based system.
The grant agreements for the selected proposals are then signed between the students and the Foundation.

1 February -15 March (for research stays starting 1 August of the same year or later).

- 2 letters of recommendation, written and signed by MedUni Vienna professors. One letter of recommendation must be issued by the supervisor of the Diploa/Master/PhD thesis.
- Letter of admission from the host university in the United States incl. the exact period of stay (start and end date). Only official letters from the university will be accepted.
Accepted Applicants
Awarded applicants will have to sign a research assignment agreement with the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation.
Scholarship holders are obliged to duly apply for a visa before the start of the stay abroad and to provide proof of having taken out sufficient travel, health and accident insurance (including insurance for repatriation in case of emergency) as well as sufficient third-party liability insurance, otherwise the scholarship cannot be released.
Payment is generally made in two instalments, with the first instalment of 80% due before the start of the research stay and 20% upon completion of the research period and approval of the written documentation.
After the Research Stay
- Confirmation signed by supervisor at host institution indicating the exact duration of the research period abroad
- Final research report (min 7500 words excl. front page, table of contents and references/testimonials)
- Confirmation of supervisor at home institution regarding successful completion/approval of the research period abroad
- Field report (maximum 2 pages, including a general impression of the research stay abroad, quality of the host institution, contacts and integration within the host institution, organisation and location of the host institution, recommendations for future students/scholars of the Marshall Plan Foundation).
- E-mail address for contacts after the research stay
- Flight tickets/boarding passes
- Possible applications for a release delay of the research report on the website of the Marshall Plan Foundation (maximum possible embargo period: 3 years)
