Admission with university entrance qualification examination for the studies of human- and dental medicine

Prospective students without a school-leaving examination may acquire the right to attend the Medical University of Vienna as a regular student by taking the University entrance qualification examination for mature students (SBP).


What is the SBP?

The University entrance qualification examination for mature students (SBP) conveys a restricted right to study in a specific subject area. University entrance qualification examination for mature students can be taken at MedUni Vienna for the “Medical Studies” authorised group. This examination is valid at all Austrian universities, at which a study programme of the Medical Studies authorised group is set up. The Latin supplementary exam is dispensed with for those who have completed University entrance qualification examination, but every student should acquire sufficient knowledge of Latin within the regular study programme.

All persons, who have successfully completed the University entrance qualification examination for the Medical Studies authorised group and are aiming for admission to the Medicine and Dentistry degree programme at the Medical University of Vienna, must take part in the admissions test.


Who is entitled to take the University entrance qualification examination?

A University entrance qualification examination is authorised if a personal application is made. Prospective students shall fulfil the following requirements:

  • Target admission to studies for an authorised group at a university,
  • Have reached the age of 20 and can verify a successful professional or extra-professional educational background, going clearly beyond compulsory schooling, for the targeted course of study,
  • Hold Austrian citizenship or
  • proof of citizenship of a Member State of the European Economic Area (EU countries and Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) 
  • Swiss nationals,
  • Convention refugees recognised by the responsible Austrian authority, and
  • preferentially treated third country nationals who have been granted the following residence permit status:
    • “Permanent residence EU” issued by the responsible Austrian authority
    • “Permanent residence EU” issued by the responsible authority in another EU Member State and a residence permit for Austria
    • “Permanent residence card” issued by the responsible Austrian authority
  • Turkish nationals based on the EEA/Turkey Association Agreement, if they:
    • normally live with their parents in Austria and
    • the parents are or were duly employed in Austria (proof: registration cards for student and parents;
 income tax assessment for one parent)
