Who we are
The SPIE/Optica Student Chapter is a non-profit organization based at the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering (CMPBME). Our members are PhD students at the Medical University of Vienna and conduct research on optics related topics at the CMPBME. SPIE ("The International Society For Optics And Photonics") and Optica ("The Optical Society") are international associations, which among other things, host journals for publishing research works in the field of optics and photonics and organize scientific conferences, in which many of our members regularly participate.
Our Activities
Throughout the year, we engage in various initiatives aimed at educating and inspiring. From the International Day of Light, the Vienna Daughters' Day and the "Lange Nacht der Forschung" to hands-on workshops during Children's University, we're dedicated to demonstrating and communicating how optics and photonics drive innovations in healthcare. These events allow us to share the potential of light-based technologies in medical diagnostics, treatments, and research with a broader audience. Apart from our outreach activities, we also try to foster our community by engaging in social events and connect with other academics in the field.
Connecting with Research and Industry
We actively seek engagement with researchers and professionals in optics and photonics. These connections provide a practical context for our research, highlight potential career paths, and open avenues for collaboration on real-world applications. Through industry visits and professional gatherings, we gain exposure to the latest advancements and challenges in the field, enhancing our readiness for future endeavors.
